In today’s video, we’re going to check out one of the new features added in Blender 2.82 – the ability to create custom profiles with the Bevel tool!

This allows you to customize the profiles you create with the bevel tool in order to create just about any kind of profile you could want!

The way it works is simple – first, start by activating the bevel tool with edges or faces selected. Then, at the bottom of the menu that pops up for “bevel,” there’s a little check box for “custom profile.”

This will pop up a little viewport that lets you edit the profile of your bevel by adding points.

One thing to note about this is that the final result is definitely dictated by the number of segments you add. For example – notice that right now, if I select any of the presets that come with Blender 2.82, nothing is really happening. This is because our geometry doesn’t have enough support loop detail in order for Blender to add the profile we’ve selected. The cornice profile that’s built into Blender right now would require at least 13 segments to create the detail shown in the custom profiles window.

If we add segments to our bevel, however, you can see that then the detail of the profile starts filling in in our bevel locations.

There are 4 different built-in profiles you can use. In addition, there are also an infinite number of combinations of custom profiles you can create by clicking and dragging inside the custom profile creation window.

Note that this can get a bit weird around your corners – the intersections on these can get a bit complicated, and you can set them to either grid fill, where it will try to interpolate the intersection between the edges, or cutoff, meaning that it will cut off your edges before they intersect/interact.

You can also bevel a 2D shape by selecting the vertex mode.
